Today in History –> December 21, 2017 –> December 21, 1937
Doc, Grumpy, Happy, Sleepy, Bashful, Sneezy, and Dopey. Try saying that a few times fast.
Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs was one of my favorite movies growing up. Despite that I am still learning new information about my favorite animation movies, I can’t help to watch one of them from time to time. Bring that inner child of me out for an hour or so. No harm done.
Based on the Germany fairy tale with the same name written by the Grimm Brothers, Walt Disney Productions and the RKO Radio Pictures took on the task of transforming the story into a full length cel animated feature film. This movie would be their first tackle on animation and I must say, they did a great job.
On this day, December 21 in 1937 Snow White was premiered at the Carthay Circle Theatre, followed by a nationwide release on February 4, 1938. Instantly, it was a total success hitting in the top ten of America’s box office.
Ever since then, Snow White has evolved into popular theme park attractions, video games, Broadway musicals, and do not forget the countless variations of movies, TV shows, and books we’ve had over the years.
Believe it or not, the year this movie was released shocked me. Who would ever thought by technology standards that an animation with such great quality could be constructed around 1937? Allow me to say it again, 1937!!! See, I was born in 1993 so growing up watching this had me believing it was released around that time. So, I applaud the creators and the artists who had me fooled all these years…until now when I took the time to research it.
Was anyone else fooled? What was your favorite Disney animation movie? Which one(s) didn’t you like?
